La natura riesce a regalare meraviglia, come nel caso delle tartarughe liuto che a decine si sono recate sulle spiagge thailandesi per deporre le loro uova. Solo a Phuket, la più grande isola della Thailandia, sono stati trovati 11 nidi e numeri di questa portata non se ne riscontravano ormai da oltre 20 anni.
La tartaruga liuto, scientificamente denominata Dermochelys coriacea, è la tartaruga più grande del mondo dotata di un carapace rinforzato per poter resistere con più facilità ai predatori. Da adulti gli esemplari possono raggiungere i 250 cm di lunghezza, in alcune eccezioni anche i 300 o 350 cm e arrivano a pesare anche 700 kg. In Thailandia questa specie è considerata a rischio, mentre l’International Union for Conservation of Nature, dal 2013 l’ha inserita nella lista delle specie vulnerabili; dopo aver eseguito un controllo sulla popolazione ha, infatti, abbassato il rischio di estinzione annoverandola non più tra le specie in pericolo critico, ma tra quelle vulnerabili.
Pare che avvistamenti simili si siano ripetuti anche in altre spiagge, tanto da spingere il direttore del Phuket Marine Biological Centre a dichiarare alla stampa locale che si tratta “di un ottimo segnale, dato che molte aree per la nidificazione sono state distrutte dagli esseri umani”.
Potrebbe proprio essere una conseguenza dell’assenza di turisti dovuta alle restrizioni per l’emergenza Covid-19, infatti Phuket è una delle mete più ambite sotto il profilo turistico thailandese.
Anche in altri luoghi del mondo si sono verificati episodi analoghi e secondo un altro esperto, il direttore esecutivo di Sea Turtle Conservancy, in Florida, gli effetti di questo periodo di quarantena potrebbero manifestarsi a lungo termine, apportando un miglioramento alle condizioni del mare almeno per l’anno 2020.
Solo poche settimane fa, in India, molte decine di migliaia di tartarughe marine sono apparse sulle spiagge pronte a deporre le uova; basandosi su una stima, prossimamente ci saranno circa 60 milioni di nuovi nati (ogni tartaruga deposita tra le 50 e le 150 uova).
Insomma, in un momento così tragico che coinvolge tutto il mondo e porta ansia, paura e dolore, leggere di buone notizie che riguardano il ritorno alla vita e alla libertà, fa rinascere anche noi. Un aspetto positivo che ci deve far riflettere e, possibilmente, pensare ad un turismo meno invasivo, rispettoso delle specie che hanno tutto il diritto di usufruire degli spazi in cui per natura sono portate a vivere.
